With browsing sites online, one of the biggest concerns is the time it takes for pages to load. UC Browser works well in quickly processing sites for quick viewing, and it actually is not the software that makes viewing a problem, it is the hardware.

UC Browser can easily reformat sites to fit the screen on various Symbian devices, but the problem is that most sites cannot easily be viewed in portrait mode and most sites have to be read in landscape view.

YouTube for Mobile is a compact, yet powerful port of the popular video sharing service, compatible with a variety of Series 60 devices.

If you really can't bear to be away from YouTube while you're out and about, then you should definitely install YouTube for Mobile. It offers a clear front-end that makes finding and playing content on YouTube quick and effortless.

The main page of YouTube for Mobile is ultra minimalistic, containing a preview of a featured video, plus three options: 'Search', 'Popular Videos', and 'My Account'. The 'Menu' screen gives you easy access to other services, and many of these options can be launched using hotkeys.

The search function in YouTube for Mobile is very straightforward, displaying results in a very clear manner, and keeping a history of your searched-for items. You can view popular videos with the click of a button to see most-visited, top rated, most recent, or recently featured.

YouTube for Mobile gives you a decent range of options for managing your account. Besides allowing you to access your favorites, playlists, subscriptions, etc. The app even allows you to publish videos, using the 'Upload' tool. Be warned though, this can take a long, long time, and if you don't have a data plan for GPRS you'll end up spending a fortune.

There are a few strange glitches with the current version of YouTube for Mobile - the program hangs from time to time, and it constantly calls up Internet security warnings if you haven't disabled this option in your phone's settings.

Overall though, YouTube for Mobile makes for a manageable slimmed-down version of the popular video site to carry around with you.

Opera Mobile is a mobile web browser designed to help you browse sites through a desktop-style user interface.

Version 11 of Opera Mobile has borrowed much more from its desktop-based big brother, so if you enjoy using Opera on your PC or Mac then you can now look forward to a similarly smooth ride on your mobile with Opera Mini.

The user interface in Opera Mobile 11 is more usable than ever. The hub of the app is the Speed Dial feature, whereby you can set one-click shortcuts for up to nine of your favorite sites. Just like in the desktop version, these display thumbnail previews of the sites to make things as clear and simple as possible.

Opera Mobile utilizes a tab-based interface, meaning that you can load multiple pages at once simply by clicking on the plus arrow in the top right-hand corner. Version 11 includes the ability to open links in the background, just by holding down a link and selecting 'Open in new tab'.

Navigating with Opera Mobile

Other navigational aids in Opera Mobile include an auto-complete feature in the address bar, and a built-in search bar. Unfortunately this search bar only supports Google and is not customizable with other search engines.

Viewing pages in Opera Mobile is a delight. As with the previous version, you can opt to view the whole web page on screen or simply tap to zoom in to a particular area. The latest version finally adds support for pinch-to-zoom, provided you have a multi-touch device that supports this features. If not, you can zoom incrementally.

Other features

For those who love to tinker around with stuff, Opera Mobile is sure to please because the program is simply rammed with options. You can alter image quality, font size, and screen orientation, and there is a wealth of privacy settings too. As you'd expect, there's support for bookmarks and browser history, too. Opera Mobile also adds support for sharing links via Facebook, Twitter or email.

Unlike the latest desktop version, Opera Mobile doesn't support extensions. This is a shame, because it would be great if developers could add functionality to the browser through third party plug-ins, as they can with Firefox Mobile.

Load times in Opera Mobile aren't as fast as they are in the Mini version of the program. However, if you enable the Opera Turbo option, you can take advantage of Opera's famed server-side compression technology, making pages quicker to load. Although the Symbian version doesn't support Flash, Opera Mobile does include support for HTML 5 audio and video.

Opera Mobile 11 is a very comfortable web browser to use. It makes viewing sites on a phone almost as pleasant as it is in a desktop browser.

Ease of use

There are a few settings you can tinker around with that help you personalize your Skype experience. For instance, you can choose to enable or disable the Mood message prompt, activate audio notifications, and show or hide phonebook contacts. There's even an option for forwarding calls to another number.

If you're expecting a fully-fledged version of Skype that has all the features of the PC or Mac version of the program then you'll be a little disappointed. There's no video conferencing or games, for example, and there are no tools for organizing your contacts into categories.

Candy Pop Saga is enjoyable to play, though it lacks that something special in its gameplay to lift it above all the other titles in this genre. There are only two, rather dull power-ups that simply remove a line or a column, and the gameplay gets very repetitive.

Symbiosis 3D Theme is an eye-catching theme for Symbian phones with 3D icons. The free theme includes an elegant purple and blue wallpaper and transforms context menus in the Symbian OS, adding a new purple and white color scheme. The glossy 3D icons look great and really leap out of the phone. However, we found the color scheme to be a little garish and some may find that the blue, purple and yellow combo is a bit too much.

PPSSPP is an excellent emulator of the Sony PlayStation Portable console. It supports loading the ROMs of PSP games (ISO, CSO, PBP, ELF files), demos and homebrews.

Everything you need for perfect emulation

The PPSSPP interface consists of 3 main tabs: Recent, which displays the titles played recently, Games, which lets you navigate through the folders of your PC to upload ROM, and Homebrew & Demos.

From the Settings menu, however, you can optimize the emulation parameters. Within the menu, you'll find 4 items:

• Graphics - Allows you to change the rendering settings, the frame rate, the texture scaling, the texture filtering, and much more.


• Audio - Includes 4 options to modify some of the audio parameters.


• Controls - Allows you to change the mapping of the controls and the ability to enable or disable the touch screen controls.

You can change the language, save screenshots in PNG format, clear the list of recently used games, enable the use of cheats, access developer tools, as well as new experimental features that optimize emulation and much more.

PPSSPP, moreover, is able to save the state of the emulated console.

Well-organized interface

The interface is well organized, simple and intuitive, and the design is convincing in its simplicity. The optimization of the settings and emulation parameters, however, are mostly aimed at more expert gamers.

One of the best emulators for Sony PSP

PPSSPP is an excellent emulator for the PSP. It's free, works well, doesn't require installation, offers a high level of configuration, and provides a good level of emulation.

You must remember, though, that you're only permitted to use the emulator if you own the original copy of the game you are emulating.
